ARTIST BIO

Linda Syddick Napaltjarri (born c. 1937) is one of many Western Desert women who took up painting in the early 1990’s, as part of the contemporary Indigenous Australian art movement. Her work includes a distinctive fusion of Christian and Aboriginal traditional themes and symbols (Christian Cross).

She has been a finalist in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards four times and the Blake Prize (a religious art competition) at least three times. Her works are held by numerous galleries around Australia and worldwide. Linda Syddick was the subject of a portrait painted by Robert Hannaford, which was a 1992 finalist in Australia’s premiere portrait competition, the Archibald Prize.

Linda has formed a distinctive style that combines her Christian beliefs and traditional Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. Her paintings include the themes of “Sulky Man” and “Kangaroo Man” which depict both mythological stories and actual events of traditional life in the desert. One style in particular that Linda is popularly known for painting depicts a windmill, which her family came upon at the time they walked out of the desert, and believed was some kind of monster.

Ruby Daniels Napurrula was born in 1961 and she lives at the Docker River Community (Kaltukatjara), which is located southwest of Alice Springs and west of Stuart Highway.

Her mother is the highly acclaimed artist Linda Syddick and often paints alongside Linda and her daughter Samantha Daniels Napaltjarri.

Ruby has been painting since 1996 and is proud to promote her culture through her artwork that was taught to her by her Grandparents and mother.

Ruby’s style heavily incorporates lines and dots that are connected via

band-like shapes to different sized polygons and roundels. Ruby mainly uses rich colors of yellows, reds, pinks, purples, and calming blues, which result in a vibrant landscape of colours.

Samantha Daniel Napangati was born in 1982 and is from the very remote Docker River Community (Kaltakatjarra), about 670km southwest of Alice Springs (by road).

She grew up with a strong artistic influence from her family of successful artists. Including her grandparents Clifford Possum and Linda Syddick Napaltjarri.

Samantha’s stories include “Travelling Women”, “Bush Seeds”, “My Grandmother’s Country” and “Women’s Ceremony”. Recently her favourite subject is “My Country” which represents important landmarks and features in the landscape.

Her paintings are very descriptive, telling the story of her family’s country. With expertly applied colours and exceptional composition, Samantha’s art immerses you in a very feminine and delicate universe.

Samantha’s talent is obvious and she is destined to becoming a major artist whose artwork will be sought after by collectors worldwide.
